Picking Your Essential Marketing Tasks

Picking Your Essential Marketing TasksAs the Director of Marketing for your business, it’s important that you only work on essential marketing tasks.

Let me define what I mean by “essential marketing tasks.”

So many times, entrepreneurs implement too many marketing activities at the same time.

The problem with this strategy is that you are not doing any one marketing activity well. You are spread too thin, which is hard when you’re a solopreneur.

You are never sure if you’re gaining maximum power from marketing because you can’t implement any one marketing activity fully.

Think of a series of holes in the ground. You could dig 12 holes at two inches in depth – and spread your marketing around that way. Or you could dig two holes at 12 inches in depth – and go deeper into each marketing tactic.

Spoiler alert: For solopreneurs, the two deep holes will get you more profitable results.

Let’s take a look at your essential marketing tasks in this week’s marketing strategy.

Don't implement too many marketing tactics at once. You will spread yourself too thin and not get the results you're looking for. - Jill Celeste

BLOG:

Let’s face it: They are endless marketing choices. It’s like a Las Vegas buffet!

On your plate, you can pile Facebook ads, webinars, flyers, brochures, business cards – the choices go on and on. They all look good and helpful, but you don’t have unlimited time or money to implement it all.

It’s easy to understand why marketing is overwhelming for so many solopreneurs.

Where do you even begin? What should you choose to do first? How much marketing stuff should you pile on to your plate?

Deep breath. Here’s where essentialism comes in.

What do I mean by essentialism?

It’s when you only pick the few essential marketing tasks that will move your business forward. And not just any marketing tasks – the ones that will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

I know:  You’re going to be tempted to try everything. Don’t! That won’t get you the results you’re looking for.

How many marketing tasks should you focus on?

I’ve seen many successful entrepreneurs focus on one thing – networking, speaking, webinars, whatever is strategic to them– and do an outstanding job getting their message out into the world. Indeed, their business grew by just focusing on one thing.

But what if you have two things that you want to focus on? Is that okay? Absolutely!

I wouldn’t focus on more than three marketing tactics, though, because that’s when the overwhelm occurs.

Here’s a gauge to help:

  • Focus on one marketing tactic: Super ideal
  • Focus on two marketing tactics: Awesome
  • Focus on three marketing tactics: Great but be careful
  • Focus on four marketing tactics: Yikes, you are spreading yourself too thin.

What marketing tasks should you focus on?

Here’s an assignment you can complete to help you find the right marketing tactics to focus on:

Take a look at your marketing plan (if you don’t have one, then jot down what marketing tactics you’ve implemented over the past three months).

Of all the marketing tactics you selected, which ones will bring you in the front of the most ideal clients at the least cost possible?

Those are the ones to focus on – every time.

Once you have them picked out, write down your three essential, must-focus-on marketing tactics. Keep this list front and center on your desk or workspace, and ask yourself every day: How can I focus on these marketing tactics today?

When you’re focused on only 1-3 marketing tactics, your marketing will bloom. Be intentional about where you focus, and you’ll love the marketing results you will receive.

ABOUT JILL

Hi, I’m Jill Celeste. I teach purpose-driven entrepreneurs (just like you) everything you need to know about marketing so you can become the Director of Marketing for your business.

Because when you put your Director of Marketing hat squarely on your head, marketing is your number one priority (which will result in more clients!).

When I am not teaching about marketing, you’ll find me hanging out with my husband or my teenage boys, or taking a nap with my basset hound, Emma. I also like to play with my two kittens and feed the backyard ducks (much to my neighbor’s chagrin).

If you’re feeling alone in your entrepreneurial journey, I invite you to check out my monthly membership group, The Celestial Circle. Affordable, loving, supportive, informative, and fun – that’s how we roll in The Celestial Circle. We would love to welcome you!
