Sales Is A Numbers Game

Sales Is A Numbers Game by Jill CelesteWhen I first started my coaching practice, I received a piece of valuable advice from a business coach: “Sales is a numbers game.”

I will never forget when she told me this nugget of wisdom. First, it showed me that I can’t just wave a magic wand and customers would magically appear. It will take (marketing) work.

Second, it removed the “they won’t like me” feeling from the equation. It’s about meeting a volume of people. Of course, the odds are that people won’t convert to customers. It’s just math!

I want to explore the “sales is a numbers game” message a little further with you, putting it into a context of the Law of Attraction and authentic marketing.

Because, yes, we need to get out there in a big way (it’s a numbers game, after all), but we can do so without selling our souls.

Let’s delve in!

Even with the best, most self-selecting marketing copy, you will still need a lot of people to enter the top of your sales funnel. - Jill Celeste

BLOG:

You’ve heard of a sales funnel, right? Visualize it now: A large upside-down triangle that shows sales prospects going in at the top, and working their way down the funnel until they become a paying customer.

Most times, when you see a photo of a sales funnel, you see a simple upside triangle.

I think this picture of a sales funnel is a disservice, because it does not depict how big the top of that triangle must be. It looks so neat and proportional, but it’s not.

An accurate sales funnel would show a huge opening at the top. Through your marketing, you cast a wide net, catching folks and inviting them in.

Even with the best, most self-selecting marketing copy, you will still need a lot of people to enter the top of your sales funnel.

Why? Because sales is a numbers game.

The 1% Conversion Rule

I recently read Chillpreneur by Denise Duffield-Thomas, where she talks about her 1% Rule. Basically, her conversation rate on a sales page is 1% (page 204).

That’s just from a sales page, of course, not high-touch selling like Introductory Sales Calls, but most of us are trying to sell things online – so this fact is, well, sobering.

Let’s look at the math behind this…

Using Denise’s 1% rule, if you only have 100 people on your mailing list, you can expect one person to buy what you’re offering from a sales page. Look what happens when you have 1,000 email subscribers (average of 10 people purchasing). How about 10,000 subscribers? That’s 100 customers.

What does this mean for you?

Ramp up your visibility to get more sales

You need to ramp up your visibility so you can invite lots of ideal clients into your funnel. That means doing more networking, guest speaking, webinars, and lead magnets to authentically draw people to you.

If you are unhappy with your sales, this is the missing piece: More people going into the top of your funnel!

From a Law of Attraction standpoint, this makes sense, right? The more positive energy (marketing) you put out there, the more positive energy (ideal clients) you’ll attract. When you start finding immense joy in the process of marketing, watch out! Those ideal clients will be running into the top of your sales funnel.

Take a look at your marketing strategy right now. Is a good portion of your marketing about meeting new, potential ideal clients?

If not, it’s time to ramp up your visibility marketing. When you do, you’ll start seeing the conversions you are hoping for.

ABOUT JILL

Hi, I’m Jill Celeste. I teach purpose-driven entrepreneurs (just like you) everything you need to know about marketing so you can become the Director of Marketing for your business.

Because when you put your Director of Marketing hat squarely on your head, marketing is your number one priority (which will result in more clients!).

When I am not teaching about marketing, you’ll find me hanging out with my husband or my teenage boys, or taking a nap with my basset hound, Emma. I also like to play with my two kittens and feed the backyard ducks (much to my neighbor’s chagrin).

If you’re feeling alone in your entrepreneurial journey, I invite you to check out my monthly membership group, The Celestial Circle. Affordable, loving, supportive, informative, and fun – that’s how we roll in The Celestial Circle. We would love to welcome you!
